Choosing Childcare for children with special education needs and disabilities

Choosing the right childcare service is important for you and your child. You need to be confident that your child is safe, secure and happy. Sometimes it can feel daunting trying to find a suitable childcare or early education place for a child with a disability or special educational needs (SEND) but there is lots of information, help and support you can tap into.

Most childcare providers offer inclusive childcare. Under the Equality Act 2010, all childcare and early education providers have a responsibility to:

not treat a disabled child ‘less favourably’ than other children. This means that your child should have the same play and learning opportunities as other children and you should not be charged more for offering the same service to a disabled child and;

make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to make sure that it is not difficult or impossible for disabled children to make use of a service.

If you have searched within the child care section and cannot identify any suitable provision, you can contact a Parent Engagement Officers and request support from their brokerage service. Call the Information and Advice Helpline 0161 209 8356 or email
