Independent Choices is an independent charity for individuals affected by domestic abuse, operating locally across Greater Manchester. With over 40 years’ experience as a leading independent domestic abuse charity, we know the impact that abuse has on people’s lives and what it takes to help them get their lives back on track. Our specialist teams provide free, individual, independent, emotional and practical help to enable individuals to be made aware of their rights and offered choices so that they can live with out the fear of domestic abuse.
Greater Manchester Domestic Abuse Helpline
Independent choices provides the Domestic abuse helpline for Greater Manchester. The Helpline is confidential and you do not have to give your name. The Domestic abuse helpline is a safe space for you to talk through what is going on at the moment and give you the options that are available to you. If you are in immediate danger please call the police on 999.
The Community Helpline Language Service (CHLS)
CHLS is a unique dedicated confidential service provided by Independent Choices and is part of the Greater Manchester Domestic Abuse Helpline for anyone experiencing or has experienced domestic abuse. The languages provided are in Urdu and Punjabi. The CHLS workers have a wide knowledge around cultural issues and barriers facing Black Minority Ethnic Refugee (BMER) communities, such as Honour Based Violence/Abuse, Forced Marriage, Female Genital Mutilation, immigration issues, no recourse to public funds, Sharia divorce, domestic work and slavery.
The LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Advisor) is our service which specifically works with LGBT+ people who are experiencing domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can take many forms including coercive control, physical, financial, sexual and emotional abuse. There can be additional factors that can make it more difficult for somebody who is LGBT+ to seek support for domestic abuse. This can include, being threatened to be outed to family, friends or work colleagues. It can include using your gender identity or sexual orientation as a method of control.
