Victoria Baths
When it opened in 1906, Victoria Baths on Hathersage Road, Manchester, was described as "the most splendid municipal bathing institution in the country" and "a water palace of which every citizen of Manchester can be proud." Not only did the building provide spacious and extensive facilities for swimming, bathing and leisure, it was built of the highest quality materials with many period decorative features:- stained glass, terracotta, tiles and mosaic floors.
Victoria Baths served the people of central Manchester for 87 years and established themselves in the affections of all those who used the facilities.
When Manchester City Council decided it had to close Victoria Baths in 1993, there was a vigorous reaction in the local community. Manchester residents greatly valued the Turkish baths, the Aeratone, the swimming facilities, and the building itself.
The campaign to try and prevent closure of the Baths became the Friends of Victoria Baths and a charitable trust - the Victoria Baths Trust - was set up with the aim of safeguarding and restoring the building for use by the community. Our story has many ups and downs, including the amazing success on BBC's Restoration series in 2003.
Victoria Baths is now partly restored and functioning as a cultural hub, offering a diverse range of recreational events and activities. From wedding ceremonies, community events, filming, conferences, and cultural events, there's something for everyone at the Victoria Baths! As well as our range of events, we are open for guided building tours and to explore the heritage and history of the Baths every Wednesday, 11am - 3pm from April - October, and throughout the year as part of Victoria Baths Trust events including SpringFest and our Festive Fair.
