The Children's Trust

Specialist Rehabilitation Services

The Children’s Trust is the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury and neurodisability. We deliver rehabilitation, education and community services through skilled teams who work with children and young people, and their families.

Our national specialist centre located south of London, in Tadworth, Surrey (junction 8 M25), is the largest of its kind in the UK. As one of the only paediatric facilities outside of an acute hospital setting that can provide the most complex rehabilitation in the UK, our neurorehabilitation packages support children and young people from across the country, aged 0-18 through a range of therapies, education and play to help them make the best possible return to everyday life.

Each rehabilitation programme is tailored to the individual child’s needs, incorporating lots of different therapies delivered by a multidisciplinary team including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and play and music therapy.

We assess each child individually and are able to work with children with a variety of complex neurological conditions and health needs including (but not limited to):With services delivered in conjunction with partners such as NHS England and other funding bodies including local authorities and clinical commissioning groups, we are the only paediatric neurorehabilitation provider with a national specialised commissioning contract to deliver brain injury rehabilitation for children with the most complex needs on behalf of NHS England. This means that funding flows automatically for children who meet the criteria. Where NHS England doesn’t fund placements, we have a dedicated team who liaise with a variety of different local authorities and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), as well as private funders including international embassies and health insurance companies to pursue funding for each placement. In addition, we raise in excess of £8 million a year to support the delivery of our services through fundraising activities.

Thanks to the on-going generosity of The Children’s Trust’s supporters, our 24-acre national specialist centre features:

  • a modern rehabilitation centre
  • aquatics therapy pool
  • gym
  • specially adapted equipment
  • soft play and sensory area
  • on-site accommodation for parents (subject to availability) meaning they can remain close to their child during their stay with us.

We regularly seek feedback from parents / carers of children and young people accessing our rehabilitation services in order to continuously improve.

If you are a parent of a child with a brain injury, or are somebody involved in their care, our information service provides a variety of resources for children and young people, as well as their families, and professionals. If you’re looking for advice and support online, our Brain Injury Hub (www.braininjuryhub.co.uk) provides clinically-approved information on every stage of acquired brain injury, from being in hospital to going home and returning to school. We are also proud to offer a series of award-winning books and resources aimed at children and their families, completely free of charge. Available to order for just the cost of postage and packaging, they provide advice and guidance to children and young people living with an acquired brain injury, their families, and those involved in their care.

We have a dedicated AAC Clinical Excellence Network and Assistive Technology (AT) team who can support CYP with a need for AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) using a range of strategies and tools.  Examples of AAC used as part of a total communication system include: TaSSeLs, Makaton, PODD communication books, high tech AAC devices.

The Children’s Trust School

The Children’s Trust School is a non-maintained special school for children and young people with complex education, health, therapy and care needs. All pupils are supported through personalised multidisciplinary programmes, created in partnership with their families and carers, delivered in beautiful grounds, set amongst a 24-acre site at The Children’s Trust’s national specialist centre in Surrey.

As a regional school we admit children and young people from a wide catchment area across the South East of England. We are able to support up to 44 children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) where neurodisability, including complex needs, require an integrated approach from a team of multidisciplinary professionals.

We have an on-site specialist nursery available for children aged two years and above. We also aim to support children aged 0-5 with additional health and educational needs through Taddies, our early years parent and child group through a weekly offer.

With both day and residential placements available, our School is regulated by Ofsted, rated ‘Good with Outstanding Leadership and Management’. Our three residential houses are co-located on our 24-acre site and registered as Children’s Homes, regulated by both Ofsted Care and the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

We operate a 39-week educational curriculum with extended social/leisure activities during half terms and holidays, providing a flexible residential programme for residential pupils of up to 52 weeks, with flexibility for weekend visits home where suitable.

Our aim is to provide specialist, high-quality, multidisciplinary education and care to meet each pupil’s individual complex needs, which recognises and celebrates all achievements in a safe and happy environment, with access to a wide range of on-site professionals including teachers (including visual impairment and mutlisensory impairment), specialist support staff, therapists, consultants, doctors, and paediatric nurses.
