NACOA (National Association for Children of Alcoholics)
This organisation provides a dedicated helpline to help children of alcohol dependent parents of any age. Calls to the helpline are free and do not show up on landline phone bills. Calls are confidential and there is no need to give names when calling. If you prefer to contact NACOA by email, they recommend creating a free email account by visiting www.hotmail.co.uk or www.talk21.com. This sort of service means that emails can be read from any computer you have access to and as these accounts are password protected, no-one else can read them but you. In addition to running the helpline, NACOA's mission is to address the needs of children growing up in families where one or both parents suffer from alcoholism or a similar addictive problem. NACOA has four broad aims:
- To offer information, advice and support to children of alcohol dependent parents
- To reach professionals who deal with these children
- To raise the profile of children of alcohol dependent parents in the public consciousness.
- To promote research into the problems faced by those who grow up with parental alcoholism and the prevention of alcoholism developing in this vulnerable group of children.
